Best Preventative Practices

A fan on Facebook asked: “Hi Tina! I’m in my early 20s and want to be proactive about preventing wrinkles. What are some things I can do?”

Great question! One of the best ways to prevent and maintain a youthful look is using an SPF daily. The sun is one of the worst causes of damage to the skin. It prematurely ages us. I also believe someone your age should consider having Microdermabrasion treatments done every 3 months or so. Home care is key as well. I believe we should wash morning and night as well and use an antioxidant (something like a vitamin C serum). Of course your diet and lifestyle plays a part in the aging process as well. If you smoke or drink that can take a toll on your skin and cause premature aging. Eat healthy, supplement with a multi vitamin and an EFA (fish oil). Does that help?

Brown Spots?

A fan on Facebook asked: “Ok. I’m getting old and getting brownish pigmentation on my chin. Any suggestions?”

A brown spot can be many things so it depends on what it is exactly. There are age spots, sun spots, melasma, lentigines, lentigo and many other names for brown spots. If you believe it’s from the sun then there are several different products with ingredients that can help lighten the spots such as hydroquinone or kojic acid. Different laser treatments can lighten spots however it depends on your skin type. I recommend seeing a dermatologist or a medical esthetician before doing anything to confirm what it is and then move forward in selecting a treatment. Thank you for your question. I hope this gives you some direction.

22 Things Happy People Do Differently

Love this post!

Successify!

This article is from Chiara Fucarino. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: This article is not intended to address those with clinical depression or other mental illnesses.

happinessThere are two types of people in the world: those who choose to be happy, and those who choose to be unhappy. Contrary to popular belief, happiness doesn’t come from fame, fortune, other people, or material possessions. Rather, it comes from within. The richest person in the world could be miserable while a person living in the slums of a third world country could be happy and content. I have spent plenty of time amongst both groups to have seen it first hand. Happy people are happy because they make themselves happy. They maintain a positive outlook on life and remain at peace with themselves.

The question is: how do they do that?

It’s quite simple. Happy people have good habits that enhance their lives. They do…

Fat Reduction Treatments

A fan on Facebook asked: “What do you think of fat reduction treatments like Zerona and liposuction? Do you recommend them?”

I think fat reduction systems are great if you are within 10-15 lbs of your goal weight. If you are using these treatments as a weight loss solution then I don’t believe you will get the result you are looking for. We’ve tested Zerona and what I didn’t like about that treatment is that it kills the entire cell, not just the fat lipids. If you want something that is non invasive then Coolsculpting is much better. It will crystallize the fat lipids in the cells then drain through your lymphatic system while leaving the rest of the cell alive. It’s great for those places that have a pooch or small roll. As for liposuction. I like SmartLipo as you don’t have to be put under so the risk is minimized unlike regular liposuction and less expensive. The Smartlipo laser-assisted lipolysis systems are highly efficacious for disrupting fat cells and tissue tightening through coagulation as part of a liposuction procedure. Basically your fat is liquefied & then suctioned out. You have a few small incision sites. You’re awake the entire procedure but you don’t feel a thing and usually are prescribed a drug called Halcion. You don’t remember much. Research both procedures and always consult with a few different places before making a decision. I believe diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle are the best for weight reduction however sometimes you just can’t get rid of those last few pounds! The Center for Advanced Dermatology in Lakewood, Colorado performs both of these procedures. Thank you for your question!

Persistant Acne with Eczema?

A fan on Facebook asked: “Hi Tina, I will try to keep this short but let me know if you need more info! I have had persistant acne on my chin for the past 7 years. I have tried everything I can possibly think of. I use a natural toothpaste, all natural make-up, chemical free laundry soap, change the pillowcase every few days, and always wear sunscreen. I went vegan for a while to see if that would help, but it did not. I eat healthy and drink a lot of water. I have seen numerous dermos but they just give me harsh acne medication which makes my sensitive skin worse. I use the oil cleaning method and moisturise with fresh aloe and coconut oil. I take a BC pill. I have been getting peels, micro-derms and photofacials for 3 years now and nothing changes. A few weeks back it got so bad and hurt and was very dry, I visited a family friend who is a doctor and he said it was a excema outbreak and to put on hydrocortisone. That helped the excema but made me breakout more. Nothing works! Maybe its not acne…….any thoughts? Thank you!”

Thank you for the question! It sounds like you are doing many of the things I would recommend such as natural toothpaste, all natural make-up, chemical free laundry soap, and changing the pillowcase every few days. Remember to always wear sunscreen too! You may be correct that it’s more than just acne. There may be some eczema too. The exact cause of eczema is unknown however many things can cause it to “flare up.” Allergies, hot showers, chlorine..the list goes on and on. I have a few ideas I will throw out there, but it’s difficult because I haven’t seen your skin in person. I highly recommend a good quality multi vitamin and a fish oil. I believe our skin is a direct reflection of what’s going on internally. Hormones play a huge part in this as well. Here’s a link to take a free Health Assessment, and this may give you some guidelines on what to purchase for vitamins. http://bit.ly/ZZ5M4s.

Clarisonic?

A fan on Facebook asked: “I am just curious, I have been using the clarisonic for about 3 months now. I like it but I have noticed just recently that my pores seem to look bigger. I have never had large pores and I was putting on face makeup and noticed that they were very visible. Do you think it is my clarisonic? Is there something I can do or using to make the go away? Or at least make them look less visible?”

Good question! I have a couple questions for you…are you using the Clarisonic once a day or twice a day? I recommend using it only once a day.The Clarisonic exfoliates and cleans out the pores. This may make your pores may seem larger since they are no longer filled with bacteria, dead skin and  makeup so you may be noticing them more. With age our pores can appear larger as well. I recommend mineral makeup and possibly using a primer under your makeup to help the “look” of your pores. Don’t get sucked into products that say they “reduce pore size”! That’s just marketing fluff. The only thing I know of that shrinks the pore size is a procedure called PhotoDymanic Therapy. You can research this procedure; however it’s a big deal to have done. Let me know if you would like more information on it. Thanks for your question! Keep me posted.

Acne Scar Treatment

A fan on Facebook asked: “Hi Tina! My friend has really bad acne scarring on her cheeks and has tried for 10 years and has spent thousands of dollars on multiple variations of treatments and the scars have not improved much. What do you suggest?”

Thank you for your question. Scarring can be a challenge to correct however in my experience, I have found that the Co2 resurfacing laser works well in most cases. There are certain factors that play a role in treatment such as skin color, depth of scarring, and color of the scar. My recommendation for home care would be Retin A or a Retinol, this will help improve texture and stimulate collagen & elasticity. I would love to do a free consult with your friend if she is in Denver. If she’s interested have her call the Center for Advanced Dermatology to make an appointment.

Sunscreen or Moisturizer First?

A fan on Facebook asked: “Hi Tina! I was wondering what is best to put on your face first, sunscreen or moisturizer? Also, if my make-up has sunscreen in it, do I still need to put sunscreen on?”

Great question! Think of your sunscreen as the layer of defense. It should always be the last thing you apply to the skin. Many products have sunscreen in them but it’s usually not enough. If you are going to be out longer than 2 hours at a time in the sun. You should always reapply. In Colorado I recommend using Spf 30 in addition to your other products.

What’s the answer to dry skin?

A fan on Facebook asked:  “I’m in Colorado and with the dry winter weather my skin has been so dry and nothing seems to help. Any suggestions? Thanks!”

I have found that exfoliating with a product that has Retin-A or Retinol helps with the dryness. At first you will feel that it’s drying but stick with it. Also one of my favorite products is a Clarisonic face brush. This will work wonders with dry skin. Finding the right moisturizer for your skin type is key. I suggest asking for samples and trying different moisturizers until you find the one you like. Use a product for at least 2 weeks before deciding if it works or not. Our skin can take time to adjust and sometimes we have a few break outs which isn’t a bad thing. Your skin can “purge” while using something new, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s causing you to break out. I also recommend adding a Vitamin C serum to your regiment, antioxidants “give back” to your skin and can help balance out your natural oils. Lastly be sure to be taking a good multi-vitamin & a fish oil. Our skin is a direct reflection on what’s going on internally and balancing out the health of your cells can help balance out your dry skin.
